Born in London in 1811 to schoolteacher Edward Baker and Lucy Dickinson Baker, poor but educated Quakers, the boy Edward Baker and his family left England and emigrated to the United States in 1816, arriving in Philadelphia, where Baker's father established a school. Dr. Anson Gordon Henry was born in 1804, in Richfield, New York. After graduating from medical school, he moved to Springfield, Illinois to begin a medical practice and soon became acquainted with Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln.
